107673a
Float On

Reproduction of Float On by Kate Jarvik Birch

"Float On" by Kate Jarvik Birch is a vibrant and evocative work that exemplifies contemporary mixed media expressionism with a distinctly whimsical and reflective sensibility. The piece unfolds as a dynamic celebration of light, color, and the ephemeral beauty of the everyday, rendered through a richly textured and layered approach that suggests both spontaneity and meticulous intention. At its core, the composition centers on the act of blowing bubbles, a motif rendered with a sense of joyous immediacy and poetic resonance.

The artist employs a bold, almost tactile application of paint, with thick impasto strokes and a palette dominated by lush, layered greens that evoke a sun-dappled garden or a verdant meadow. These fields of green are not merely background but active participants in the narrative, their irregular, tile-like shapes suggesting movement and depth, as if the viewer is peering through a mosaic of foliage. The interplay of light and shadow across these surfaces creates a sense of atmospheric richness and organic vitality.

Emerging from the lower left, a golden bubble wand—its circular frame outlined with a bright, almost luminous yellow—serves as the narrative anchor. From it, a long, undulating bubble stretches diagonally across the canvas, capturing in its iridescent surface the very world it reflects: the greenery, the sky, and the subtle hints of a distant landscape. This reflection is not a mere mirror but a distorted, dreamlike inversion, rendered in shimmering hues of blue, pink, and white that suggest the delicate, shifting nature of soap film. The larger bubbles that float above and to the right continue this theme, each one a self-contained universe of color and light, their surfaces alive with chromatic vibrancy and the subtle play of prismatic refraction.

Birch’s technique is characterized by a confident, expressive brushwork that imbues the piece with a sense of motion and energy. The bubbles themselves are rendered with a combination of precise detail and fluid abstraction, their edges sometimes crisp and defined, other times melting into the surrounding paint, suggesting their fragile, transient existence. The artist’s use of color is particularly notable—vivid pinks and electric blues contrast with deep greens and dark, grounding shadows, creating a visual rhythm that draws the eye across the canvas and invites prolonged contemplation.

Thematically, "Float On" speaks to the fleeting nature of happiness, the beauty found in simple pleasures, and the wonder of the natural world. It is a meditation on impermanence, capturing a single, radiant moment of joy that, like a bubble, is destined to pop. The work can be classified as contemporary figurative art with strong elements of impressionistic and expressionistic influence, and it aligns with the broader tradition of American contemporary realism that embraces narrative, emotion, and sensory experience. As a reproduction print, this piece retains its visual potency and emotional depth, allowing viewers to engage with its luminous colors, intricate textures, and profound sense of wonder in a format accessible to a wide audience.

For more art by Kate Jarvik Birch click here.

Decorus Art is an authorized licensee of Wild Apple Graphics.
