farida-zaman-westchester-county-ny-art-print
Westchester County NY

Reproduction of Westchester County NY by Farida Zaman

Farida Zaman — "Westchester County NY". This illustrative cartographic work by Farida Zaman represents a significant contribution to the contemporary revival of mid-century graphic design, drawing upon the aesthetic principles of the 1950s and 60s while reimagining them for a modern audience. The piece is a masterful example of stylized representation, where the artist employs a deliberately simplified line quality and a limited, yet harmonious, color palette to transform a geographical map into a piece of narrative art. The composition is structured around an asymmetric balance, with key landmarks strategically placed to create a visual journey across the county, guided by a compass rose that anchors the viewer. Zaman’s use of a vibrant crimson red for architectural details and a soft sky blue for the background establishes a clear visual hierarchy, emphasizing the human element within the landscape. The technique, reminiscent of hand-drawn ink and watercolor, imbues the work with a tactile quality and a sense of personal touch, distinguishing it from the sterile precision of digital mapping. Historically, the artwork situates itself within a lineage of illustrative cartography that includes the work of artists like David Klein and the iconic travel posters of the mid-20th century, yet it diverges by focusing on a specific, locally significant region rather than a broad destination. This focus on a particular community reflects a broader cultural shift towards regional identity and place-based storytelling in contemporary visual culture. The interpretive significance of the piece lies in its ability to transform a functional object—a map—into an evocative artifact that speaks to the collective memory and pride of its inhabitants, making it both a decorative object and a cultural document.

For more art by Farida Zaman click here.

Decorus Art is an authorized licensee of Wild Apple Graphics.
