june-erica-vess-ancient-hashtag-ii-art-print
Ancient Hashtag II

Reproduction of Ancient Hashtag II by June Erica Vess

June Erica Vess — "Ancient Hashtag II". This work stands as a significant contribution to the contemporary discourse on the convergence of digital iconography and traditional painterly practice. The artist employs a restrained, textural approach, utilizing a palette of earthy ochres and soft beiges that evoke the aged patina of ancient manuscripts and stone tablets, yet the composition is punctuated by the unmistakable, digitally derived form of a hashtag. This juxtaposition is not merely ironic but deeply symbolic, suggesting a commentary on the erosion of meaning in the digital age, where ancient forms of communication are repurposed as modern, ephemeral symbols. The composition is built upon a foundation of layered, gestural marks and subtle washes, creating a rich surface that invites close inspection, while the sparse placement of the central motif ensures it functions as a focal point without dominating the visual field. The use of negative space is masterful, allowing the viewer's eye to rest and contemplate the relationship between the organic and the synthetic. This work aligns with the broader tradition of post-conceptual art, where the artist's process and the artwork's conceptual underpinnings are as important as the final visual product. Vess’s technique, which blurs the line between painting and drawing, reflects a contemporary interest in materiality and process, while the subject matter situates the piece within a larger cultural conversation about the nature of communication, memory, and the legacy of the digital world.

For more art by June Erica Vess click here.

Decorus Art is an authorized licensee of Wild Apple Graphics.
