june-erica-vess-field-patterns-ii-art-print
Field Patterns II

Reproduction of Field Patterns II by June Erica Vess

June Erica Vess — "Field Patterns II" is a masterful example of contemporary landscape abstraction that draws from the legacy of mid-century modernist color field painting while transcending its immediate influences through a deeply personal and contemplative vision. The work aligns with the tradition of artists who sought to distill the essence of the natural world into simplified forms and harmonious palettes, yet it departs from strict representation by emphasizing pattern and tonal relationships over topographical accuracy. Compositionally, Vess employs an asymmetric balance, with the foreground’s bold, striped fields creating a dynamic diagonal counterpoint to the soft, undulating forms of the hills in the background. The use of negative space—particularly the expansive, pale sky—serves not merely as a backdrop but as an active element that defines the volume and depth of the landscape, creating a sense of quiet expansiveness. The color palette, dominated by muted earth tones of olive, ochre, and warm brown, with accents of soft blue, is applied with a visible, painterly texture that suggests both the organic grain of the soil and the gentle sweep of a brush. This tactile quality, combined with the work’s deliberate lack of sharp detail, invites a meditative gaze, encouraging the viewer to contemplate the rhythms of the land rather than merely observe it. The piece is situated within a broader art-historical context of post-war American abstraction and the global movement toward minimalist and meditative art, yet its specific focus on the cultivated field—a symbol of human intervention and harmony with nature—gives it a unique resonance. Vess’s work is compelling not for its novelty, but for its ability to evoke a profound sense of place and tranquility through a highly refined and deliberate visual language, making it a significant contribution to the ongoing dialogue between abstraction and the natural world.

For more art by June Erica Vess click here.

Decorus Art is an authorized licensee of Wild Apple Graphics.
