Vess’s work aligns with the tradition of artists like Mark Rothko and Helen Frankenthaler, who explored the emotional resonance of large, unified fields of color. The composition is structured around a horizontal division, with a luminous, pale sky occupying the upper third, its soft, almost translucent layers suggesting the diffuse light of early morning. Below, the lower two-thirds are a tapestry of soft pinks and muted blues, applied with broad, gestural strokes that create a sense of depth and atmospheric haze. The visual structure relies on a delicate balance of color and negative space, with the sparse application of pigment allowing the white of the canvas to function as a luminous, active element rather than a mere background. This technique, known as 'color washing,' enhances the work’s ethereal quality, emphasizing the interplay between light and form. The color palette, dominated by soft pinks and cool blues, is both harmonious and subtly contrasting, evoking a sense of tranquility and introspection. The work's historical context is rooted in the post-war shift towards abstraction, where artists sought to convey universal emotions through non-representational forms. Vess’s painting, while modern in its execution, resonates with the spiritual and meditative qualities associated with early color field works, positioning it as a significant contribution to the ongoing evolution of abstract art.

For more art by June Erica Vess click here.

Decorus Art is an authorized licensee of Wild Apple Graphics.
