The work aligns with the tradition of abstract landscape painting, particularly the color field and lyrical abstraction movements, where the depiction of nature is filtered through an emotional and perceptual lens rather than a literal one. Compositionally, the piece is structured around a series of horizontal, layered bands that create a sense of depth and atmospheric recession, yet the lack of a defined horizon line or focal point encourages a horizontal, panoramic gaze. This approach emphasizes the flatness of the canvas, a key tenet of modernist abstraction, while simultaneously suggesting the vastness of the natural world. The color palette, dominated by muted earth tones and soft grays, is applied with visible, gestural brushwork that adds a tactile, textural quality to the surface. This technique, reminiscent of painters like Mark Rothko and Helen Frankenthaler, prioritizes the emotional resonance of color over representational accuracy. The low contrast and neutral temperature of the palette create a unified, harmonious effect, reinforcing the painting's tranquil and contemplative mood. Historically, this work can be situated within the broader art-historical context of environmental art and the growing interest in landscapes as sites of psychological and spiritual reflection. Jariwala's approach, while modern in its execution, resonates with the Romantic tradition of the sublime, where the vastness of nature inspires a sense of awe and introspection. The interpretive significance of 'Stillness II' lies in its ability to evoke a profound sense of calm and quietude, transforming a simple landscape into a powerful visual metaphor for inner peace and the enduring beauty of the natural world.

For more art by Nikita Jariwala click here.

Decorus Art is an authorized licensee of Wild Apple Graphics.
