Art Historian's Take
Sara Zieve Miller — "Hocus Pocus Pattern IIIB" is a masterful example of contemporary surrealist pattern design, drawing upon a rich lineage of Victorian-era macabre illustration and Art Nouveau ornamentation. The work aligns with the tradition of symbolic still life and memento mori, but departs from historical conventions through its intricate, repeating composition and integration of natural forms with the human skull. Compositionally, the piece employs a radial symmetry centered on the skull, creating a focal point that draws the eye inward while the surrounding elements of moths, beetles, and eyes orbit in a rhythmic, almost hypnotic fashion. This balanced yet complex arrangement exemplifies a sophisticated use of negative space, allowing the intricate linework to breathe while maintaining a cohesive visual narrative. The color palette, dominated by a muted beige and deep charcoal, evokes the aged paper of antique botanical and scientific illustrations, lending the work a timeless, archival quality. The technique, likely a combination of digital rendering and traditional line work, achieves a remarkable textural depth, with each element meticulously detailed to suggest the tactile qualities of ink on paper. In its historical context, the piece situates itself within the broader resurgence of interest in occult symbolism and the macabre in contemporary art, while simultaneously referencing the decorative arts of the late 19th century. The interpretive significance lies in its ability to transform a potentially jarring subject into a visually compelling and aesthetically refined composition, challenging the viewer to find beauty in the ephemeral and the decaying.

Love the artwork

The colors are great for our room. We needed something with the dark teal color. Love the artwork. The artwork however was almost ruined. The delivery person put it out on front stoop in the pouring rain. I would suggest that Decorus put the tube into sealed plastic before inserting into the shipping box.

Hi Deborah,

Thank you for the feedback, we really appreciate it—and I’m glad to hear the artwork and colors worked well for your space.

I’m sorry to hear about the delivery experience, that’s always frustrating when carriers leave packages exposed like that.

Since your order and your feedback, we took a big look at how we were packaging prints and ran with your feedback. Since the end of last year we all prints are now rolled and placed inside a protective plastic sleeve before going into the tube, which is then placed in the box, which helps prevent issues like moisture exposure during transit.

We appreciate you calling that out, it’s exactly the kind of feedback that helps us improve.

Cheers,
Shane

How will my print arrive?

Your print arrives unframed and unstretched, rolled in a protective tube. No frame, no stretcher bars, no mounting -- just the printed material. You choose how to finish it.

Does this come framed or stretched?

No. Every print ships unframed and unstretched, rolled in a tube. This is the print only -- you take it to a local frame shop, stretch it yourself, or have your designer install it however you like.

Does your canvas prints come with a bleed for stretching?

Yes, by default all Canvas Prints come standard with a 3" mirrored bleed.

Do you produce this yourselves?

Yes. Every print is produced in-house at our studio in Sarasota, Florida.

What is the difference between materials?

Poster is smooth and cost-efficient, fine art is the most elevated paper choice with rich detail, and canvas adds textural softness and painterly depth. All three ship unframed and unstretched.

Do you do custom sizes?

Yes, we do custom sizes. Please send your part number and the custom size and substrate you are looking to have printed and we can quote you the price or build you a draft order. Please send inquiries to info@decorus.art

Do you modify or crop images?

Do you need us to alter an image ratio, artist signature, change color, or other image manipulation? There is a flat $25 design fee. If the image ratio is staying the same and you just need a size not listed, please email us at info@decorus.art or tell us in chat and we can add that option to our website. There is no charge for the same ratio in a size not listed.

What is your return policy?

All sales are final due to the nature of print on demand. However, we do accept returns in cases of manufacturing defects or delivery of the wrong item. Please contact us immediately if you receive a defective or incorrect item.

What other sizes are available for a print?

To see other sizes we are capable of printing while matching the original ratio, please use our Image Aspect Calculator and plug in the original size to show other options which may not be listed.
